Road Maintenance : Information

Roads located on private lands within La Plata County are not part of any county road maintenance system. These roads may provide primary access to large blocks of lands and connects with, or is an extension of, a public road system. Many of these roads accommodate mixed traffic and serve many uses, including oil and gas activities.

The natural gas operators work together with the Energy Council to provide the maintenance necessary for many road system areas within the county. This cost share system includes brush and obstruction removal, weed spraying, clean-out and repair or replacement of drainage culverts, upkeep of the roadway which includes the road surface, shoulders, ditches, product and blading as needed. User cost, safety, comfort, and travel time are primary road management considerations.

The oil and gas industry, operators, gatherers, and interstate gas transporters provide 100% of the road funds, and the public none. A percentage system, the total amount of the wells within an area divided by individual operator totals, and gas meters is the method of determining cost share payments.
